To starts off with, Shiver and Shake and The Beano!


For my first post, I will look at issue 1 of Shiver and Shake and issue 1 of The Beano.

The free gift with The Beano was a 'Whoopee Mask' which was pretty much a green mask. Only one is in existence and it, with the first issue, recently notched up a high price on ebay. At least back then many of the gifts were actually free.

 Next, the Shiver and Shake issue 1 gift. You had a choice of 4 jokes which were, a fake spoon, a plastic buscuit, a rubber pencil and fake liquorice. I would have chosen the liquorice.

    I think the mask that came with The Beano actually came in a variety of colours. The Hotspur No. 1 from 1933 came with a really similar felt mask, but this was only avaliable in black. Since The Beano was aimed at a much younger audience than The Hotspur they used brighter colours, not black (although many, if not all, of the Beano no. 1 reprints come with a black mask for some reason).
